Andrew sainsbury - head TUTOR

I have fifteen years of experience teaching Mathematics at two of England’s leading schools, and have also tutored students on an individual basis for over twenty years. In the latter stages of my teaching career, I coordinated my school’s teaching of A-Level. All thirty students in my final GCSE class achieved a grade 9. For approximately ten years I have delivered small group courses to help students prepare for Maths entrance exams and STEP.The beauty of one-to-one tutoring is having the opportunity to tailor learning to the precise needs of the individual. However, there are some things which I believe are the same for all students, regardless of their starting point and their aspirations. Above all, confidence is key, and my approach focuses on boosting self-belief by means of the way I interact with students and the choice of problems we work on together. It's vital to foster a culture where students can pose the questions that perhaps they don't feel they can ask in class. One-to-one tutoring also enables me to ensure that the prior knowledge needed for success with new concepts is completely secure.I always aim to develop understanding rather than just the ability to apply a process. It can sometimes be better to know how to deploy a technique before having an appreciation of the principles behind it, but ultimately I think it is important to grasp the 'why' as well as the 'how'.Where university admissions tests are concerned, I initially focus on the techniques and concepts which form the building blocks of successful problem solving, many of which are not covered explicitly in normal A-level studies. It's then a case of fitting those blocks together to solve complete questions. It can be hard for students who have always found maths easy to adjust to the challenge of these exams, and I always try to engender a mindset that relishes that challenge. I also encourage students to reflect on their learning; it's very easy (and fully justifiable!) to pat oneself on the back after successfully solving a hard problem, but it's also important to think about what can be learnt from the experience, and to ask if there was a better way to tackle the question.I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a first-class honours degree in Mathematics before achieving a distinction in a postgraduate Computer Science Diploma at the same institution. I later completed my PGCE at University College London’s Institute of Education. Before going into teaching, I worked for nearly ten years in banking as a derivatives trader, and I have also delivered training relating to the financial markets.
